Context | Imagines Atticus' friend Cornelius' concern that he should not be able to win over Balbus. |
Comments | Shackleton Bailey: term usually understood to mean 'feel slighted', but the passive more commonly means to 'be confused', 'miscalculate'. Origin of the meaning may be financial and Shackleton Bailey argues that this is how it should be interpreted here: 'Balbus, as Caesar's chief financial expert, might need the Quaestor Urbanus' assistance to get his accounts straight'. According to Shackleton Bailey, Brink suggests that there may also be a 'play on speechlessness (cf. ἄλογος) in relation to Balbus-Atypus. |
